Message from the president on the 50th Anniversary
Dear Friends:
Earlier this month, we staged our third and final 50th anniversary event — a showcase of our talented students’ exceptional work — which concludes this successful and memorable year-long celebration.
To me, our 50th year has underscored the deep well of support we are fortunate to have in our community. It is apparent in the many alumni who have shared stories of the ways Seattle Central has changed their lives. I see it in the large number of community members who participated in our 50th events, whether to celebrate Seattle Central’s equity and social justice tradition, or serving as mentors to help jumpstart our students’ careers. And it shows in the level of giving to support student scholarships, which has continued to grow each year.
As rewarding as it has been to honor our past and celebrate the present, our focus must now turn to this institution’s future. Ever since I first became president, I have been thinking about what Seattle Central’s next 50 years should look like. I believe we can have the greatest impact by serving as a bulwark against the growing inequality in our region, where some of our most vulnerable community members are being shut out of the surging economy.
This means collaborating with community organizations, government agencies, private industries and philanthropic entities to create innovative solutions and programs that can train people for the careers of tomorrow, and help our students succeed with vital support services.
