Seattle Central hosts students from Taiwan

Students studying Chinese were able to practice their language skills during a special visit from a delegation of students and faculty from Yunlin University in Taiwan.

Students studying Chinese at Seattle Central spent a recent afternoon hosting students from Yunlin University, located in Taiwan, an island nation near China. Students from each college learned about differences in culture, communication and the education system in each country.

The Taiwanese students toured the campus and learned about the programs offered while sharing facts and information about their college. Following the presentation, each college exchanged gifts.

Seattle Central instructor Tsai-En Cheng, who teaches Chinese, coordinated the visit as an opportunity for her students to participate in a cultural exchange.

“Seattle Central instructors do their best to give students knowledge with a global perspective,” Cheng said. “I thought, ‘If I cannot bring my students to Asia, why not invite students from Asia to our college to learn how Yunlin Tech helps their students build global perspective."

Seattle Central students were able to practice their Chinese language skills.

“It was really nice to practice Mandarin with the Taiwan students,” student Lora Tseng said. “In class, I mostly practiced with my classmates or spoke to the teacher, but the opportunity to speak with many Mandarin-speaking students in casual conversation was wonderful.”

Student and Mandarin Club President Derrick Reese said it was a great chance for a cultural exchange. “We got to learn about their school and their thoughts on school in the U.S.” He added he hopes to host more visitations in the future.
