Culinary Student Wins International Award in Spain

Lukas Augenstein, a student in the Seattle Culinary Academy at Seattle Central, earned second place in the Fourth Annual International Tapas Competition in Valladolid, Spain.

His winning entry “Salmon’s Cracker” consisted of sherry cured smelt on a pink peppercorn and orange zest cracker with fried caper aioli. It was accompanied by pickled shallots, sea bean and a bachelor button blossom.

Lukas’ culinary skills not only earned him widespread notice from the prestigious competition, but other valuable prizes as well: A trip to Spain, quality chef’s tools, and $7,500 to be used
towards a culinary internship anywhere in the United States.

After completing the Specialty Desserts and Breads program at Seattle Central Community College, he plans to apply for an internship in San Francisco.
