New Maritime Academy course helps mariners meet license requirements for fishing industry

Seattle Maritime Academy’s newest course, “Assistant Engineer, Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessels” kicked off on in late June.  It was created to help mariners meet U.S. Coast Guard license requirements for Assistant Engineers of Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessels, which begin in October. These include a minimum of three years of experience in the engine room of vessels and the passing of a US Coast Guard exam. In lieu of the exam, mariners may complete this Coast Guard-approved course.

Seattle Maritime has worked with the fishing industry and the U.S. Coast Guard to develop this unique 160-hour course for engineers in the Pacific Northwest commercial fishing fleet.  The class will be delivered in three separate modules, allowing mariners to complete it while meeting their employment commitments. Course tuition is $2,400, and the Port of Seattle will fund a limited number of need-based scholarships to partially offset the cost.
