Student support program TRiO receives $2.3 million grant

TRiO staff at Seattle Central serve 350 students each year, more than any other TRiO program in the state.

In July, the U.S. Department of Education announced the renewal of the five-year grant that funds TRiO, a student support program on campus that aims to help first generation, low-income and students with disabilities complete associate degrees and transfer to four-year colleges. The $2.3 million grant will allow TRiO to continue to support up to 350 students per academic year through 2020.

The TRiO program at Seattle Central serves more students than any other TRiO program in the state. Students enrolled in the program complete education plans with TRiO counselors, and can also receive specialized financial aid guidance, personal counseling, career planning support, one-on-one tutoring and more. Of the 350 Seattle Central TRiO students served during the 2013-14 academic year, 92 percent maintained good academic standing and 77 percent maintained a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Students interested in applying for TRiO support during the 2015-16 academic year should review eligibility requirements, and visit the TRiO office in BE1102 for an application.
