College hosts workshops, Clothesline Project in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In recognition of October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Seattle Central College is working to raise awareness about this issue campus wide. Women’s Programs organized a series of workshops and speaker events that address domestic violence and sexual assault from a variety of perspectives. The campus library is also hosting events as part of the Conversations on Social Issues lunchtime series. Additionally, each Thursday during the month of October, Women’s Programs will host the Clothesline Project, which invites survivors of violence and their allies to contribute to a visual display of painted t-shirts.

Wednesday, Oct, 7: Domestic Violence Awareness Panel – “Love Shouldn’t Hurt”
BE1110, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.
Chrysta Storm with New Beginnings, Maria Pintar of the Seattle YWCA, and Detective Nick Carter of the Seattle Police Department will address the cycle of abuse and describe services available in the community.
Thursday, Oct. 8: The Clothesline Project
The Atrium, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in t-shirt painting to bring awareness to the domestic and sexual violence.
Wednesday, Oct. 14: Dr. Lynne Dodson – “Activism and Advocacy”

Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington State Labor Council, former Seattle Central professor and longtime labor activist Lynne Dodson will focus on how women fit into the grand scheme of politics surrounding social issues, including domestic violence.

Joanne Factor, owner / instructor at Strategic Living, LLC, will demonstrate some basic safety skills and self-defense techniques.

Wednesday, Oct. 28: Disabilities & Domestic Violence Panel – “I Have Value Too”
Alison McCormick, Director of Mainstay and Anna Bracilano from ADWAS (Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services) will discuss how to keep those with cognitive and physical challenges from being victimized and describe resources and services available to them.
