Honor society chapter is a top performer
Seattle Central College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa – the national honor society for two-year college students – has been recognized as a Top 100 Chapter by the national office. Out of 1,300 chapters worldwide, the college’s Alpha Chi Zeta chapter received the award in recognition of its Honors in Action and College projects, and was recognized in front of nearly 4,000 students, advisors and college administrators at PTK’s recent annual convention in Nashville, Tenn.
The College Project consists of campus service projects that have lasting benefit or impact. Organized by PTK students, Seattle Central’s chapter collected donations of hygiene products and money to assemble hygiene kits to distribute to homeless individuals.
For the Honors in Action project, the chapter’s students embarked on a research project around the theme of Rights and Responsibilities.
Nada Oakley, the chapter’s advisor, notes that Seattle Central’s chapter has been recognized as a Top 100 chapter in three out of the last four years, a mark of continuing excellence. Seattle Central has 300 members, and students must attain at least a 3.3 grade point average with a minimum of 12 credit hours of courses taken at the college.
