May 1 evening classes canceled
On May 1, all evening classes that begin at 5 p.m. or later have been canceled. A large May Day march is scheduled to take place on the campus that evening and all buildings on campus will also close at 5 p.m.
May Day has historically attracted a large crowd to the campus. These peaceful marches have sometimes escalated into violent protests with a strong police response that created an unsafe environment for people on and around our campus.
“Although this may be an inconvenience, the safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and visitors is of paramount importance,” explains President Paul Killpatrick.
The closure affects the Seattle Central College main campus on Broadway and the Siegal Center only. Seattle Vocational Institute (except for Cosmetology classes at Siegal), the Wood Technology Center and the Seattle Maritime Academy will not be affected by this cancelation and will operate normally.
