TRiO students get a glance at a future in medicine
As part of a new partnership with the University of Washington, Seattle Central students got a first-hand look at what it’s like to be a medical student.
Earlier this month, TRiO students in the newly launched Pre-Medicine Mentorship program got a first-hand look at what it’s like to be a medical student during a visit to the University of Washington School of Medicine. Students toured the facility with their mentors, who are second year UW medical students, and met with admissions staff.
Students also experienced certain lab equipment, including learning how to use tools for intubation and laparoscopic surgery. They even revived a medical mannequin from a simulated heart attack. After the tour, students audited a genetics lecture and connected with the instructor.
TRiO started the Pre-Medicine Mentorship program in the fall to support Seattle Central students who want to transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree, with the goal of attending medical school. The mentors help them stay on course toward medical school by answering questions and staying in regular communication with the TRiO students.
