Seattle Maritime Academy prepares to participate in the upcoming Seattle Maritime Festival.

The festival, which includes the world’s largest tugboat races, is sponsored by Seattle Propeller Club with support from the Port of Seattle. SMA’s training vessel, CHARLES A. KANE, will serve as the Committee boat and is responsible for setting the three heats. The Academy will also provide the Abandon Ship Demonstration using both the Kane and the recently acquired T/V DIESEL DICK. Participating in the drill will be twelve students from the Academy’s Marine Deck and Marine Engineering Certificate programs.

SMA engineering students Nick Biggness, James Sandige and Chris Schneider, coached by SMA student, Dan Gould, will be competing in the three-man Sherwin Williams and Pacific Maritime Magazine Quick and Dirty Boatbuilding Competition, presented with Tote Ocean Trailer Express, Inc.. Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc. is sponsoring the students with the entry costs and with consultations by a Jensen naval architect.

Abandon Ship Demonstration: 12:20 p.m.
Sherwin Williams and Pacific Maritime Magazine Quick & Dirty Boat building Competition: starting at 9:00 a.m. at Pier 62/63, judging at 3:00 p.m., with racing in the Bell Harbor Marina scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
WHERE: Racing is from the Grain Terminal, Pier 86, to the finish line at Pier 62/63 on the downtown Seattle Waterfront. The Abandon Ship Demonstration will be in Elliott Bay at Pier 62/63.

Background

Seattle Central Community College’s Seattle Maritime Academy (SMA) offers one of the nation’s most highly regarded and innovative technical training and professional certification programs for the maritime industry. Over the next four years, SMA will undergo $19 million in renovations to its facility. This will enable the Academy to enhance current training with new, state-of-the-art simulation and expanded radar and engineering labs.
