SEATTLE — The Wood Construction Center of Seattle Central Community College is the most comprehensive technical training facility for the wood construction trades in the State of Washington. It provides unique educational and training opportunities for both new and experienced workers participating in the three wood construction trade programs – Cabinetmaking, Carpentry and Boat Building.

On Monday, March 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. the Wood Construction Center, located at 2310 S. Lane Street, will host a special open house featuring a presentation by Schreiber Starling & Lane Architects about the Center’s planned revitalization.

With regional projected rates of population growth remaining high and the area’s industrial base continuing to shrink, the Wood Construction Center will continue to play a vital role in workforce skills training throughout Washington State for the foreseeable future.

Currently housed in a collection of aged and inadequate structures, the existing campus buildings are cramped, contain non-functional spaces, and suffer from many code and safety defects. To address this critical need, the State of Washington has provided approximately $26 million in funding to revitalize the Wood Construction Center.

Planned for construction in late 2009, Seattle Central Community College will implement a 2-phase project that will provide state-of-the-art shops and skills labs, classroom spaces, instructional support, and student support spaces.

The initial phase will remove the collection of 1940s era portable wood frame structures, sheds, and metal storage buildings scattered on the northeast portion of the campus. These will be replaced with a single two-story building totaling 58,000-square feet. While this phase is under construction, the existing buildings on the west and south sides of the campus will continue to serve the SCCC Wood Students. Upon completion of the initial phase, the old shop building will be removed and replaced with a new parking lot. The College has also secured remote off-site parking to minimize congestion around the site during construction.

The result of this project will be a new and revitalized Wood Construction Center that can provide a functional and flexible facility that meets the current and projected need for skilled workers in the Puget Sound region.

The public is invited to attend this special open house, featuring a presentation by Schreiber Starling & Lane Architects, Monday, March 23rd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Seattle Central’s Wood Construction Center, 2310 S. Lane St. Refreshments and Social Hour at 6:00 p.m. For further information, please call (206) 934-5460.
