Seattle Central Community College will be hosting an important health care education conference to address the growing health care worker shortage in our region, Friday, March 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Activity Center on Seattle Central’s campus.

Professionals from various sectors of the health care industry will meet, hear best practices, network and formulate partnerships to facilitate successful solutions for the major challenges in the present-day health care arena.

“As a community that is becoming more diverse, the challenge of ensuring that each and every resident receives quality health care is paramount,” said Gary Oertli, Interim President of Seattle Central Community College. “This entails a work force that is both technically skilled and culturally competent. All of us in health care and education have a role in determining how best to meet this challenge.”

“Our region is also a global health leader,” Oertli added. “We have some of the world’s best medical research, biomedical and biotechnical companies and organizations. These entities need highly talented, knowledgeable and skilled workers to meet the needs of our planet’s diverse and complex societies. Community colleges, working with K-12 schools, four-year universities, and the various life sciences sectors can and should be a lead player in preparing health care workers.”

At the upcoming conference, current trends, both global and local, will drive the need for discussion. Issues ranging from changing demographics, growing workforce shortages, health care reform, an aging population and an exploding global health industry, are some of the major challenges representatives from community colleges, four-year universities, health care industry partners, and community organizations will be tackling at the day-long conference.

Last year the Foundation awarded 154 scholarships totaling nearly $400,000 to 143 new and returning students representing over 30 areas of study. Funds raised in part through The Community’s Table will help the Foundation continue to provide annual scholarships, college wide tutoring and childcare assistance to hundreds of deserving students.
