Sherman Alexie to speak at Egyptian Theatre

Sherman Alexie, noted local poet, author, and filmmaker will discuss his literary works, his personal observations and the importance of National Poetry Month on April 24, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Egyptian Theatre, 805 East Pine Street. The event is free and open to the public.

He is being hosted by Seattle Central Community College Activities Board as part of its Creative Arts Series. Co-sponsor is the college’s American Indian Student Association.

Alexie grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation and will talk about how it shaped his life and his writing. He has won several writing awards, including the 2010 PEN/Faulkner Award, 2008 Odyssey Award, 2007 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, 2001 PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in The Short Story and a Special Citation for the 1994 PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Fiction.

At the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, he received the Audience Award and Filmmakers Trophy for Smoke Signals, a film he wrote and co-produced. He was also featured in the Sonicsgate: Requiem for a Team documentary, about the Sonics basketball team leaving Seattle.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Talk starts at 11 a.m. with a question/answer session to follow.
