Student wins national scholarship
Nickey Mitchell, one of Seattle Central’s All-Washington Academic Team nominees, has been named a 2017 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar. Nickey is one of only 50 students nationwide who received this honor.
The $1,500 renewable scholarship, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, is awarded to students who have performed outstanding service to their college campus and communities while maintaining a high grade point average. Nickey is Seattle Central’s first Gold Scholar since 2005.
“I am very happy, humbled and blessed to be selected as a gold scholar,” Nickey said.
The program awards nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Students must submit an application for the All-USA Academic Team and be selected as a nominee. Once nominated, independent teams of judges review each application.
“Getting involved was the best experience I ever had,” said Nickey, who will graduate this year with an associate degree in informatics and will transfer to the University of Washington in the fall.
