Student government officers announced
Seven Seattle Central College students were inducted in May to serve in several roles for the Associated Student Council (ASC), the official student governing body, for the 2017-2018 school year. The executive officers lead a range of student committees that address specific issues and concerns and promote services that enhance the student experience.
The 2017-18 Associated Student Council board members include:
Omar Osman, Executive of Administration
Omar was born in Somalia, a country in East Africa, raised in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya and moved to Seattle last year. While growing up in Kenya, he became a youth ambassador and represented 90,000 refugee youths in Kenya, participating in a Global Refugee Youth Consultation at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, last year. He is studying in Political Science and is planning to transfer to a four-year university.
MaryAnn Barker, Legislative Affairs Executive
MaryAnn is working toward a college transfer degree and eventually plans to enroll in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. She is passionate about meeting the needs of students and pledges to use her service in student government to increase opportunities for those in need of support. In her free time, MaryAnn volunteers and joins study groups.
Nabil Ahmed, Executive of Finance
Nabil has lived in Seattle for nearly 10 years, graduating from Chief Sealth International High School. As an elected student leader, he is dedicated to upholding the principles that make the Seattle Central community a unique environment. He vows to carry on the legacy of excellence that past executives have demonstrated in serving their respective student bodies, and intends to be a representative voice for all students. As the Executive of Finance, he will focus on building up the information sharing systems at Seattle Central so that students can better understand what takes place on campus and increase their involvement.
Drew Risch, Executive of Student Success
Drew moved to Seattle from Las Vegas, Nevada. With a desire for an education but no idea how he would restart his life in a new city, he immediately sought restaurant work until he figured out his plan. Originally interested in pursuing a culinary education, he changed course and is now working to earn an Associate of Business transfer degree. He is attracted to the values of diversity and acceptance at Seattle Central, which prompted him to get involved in the ASC as the Executive of Student Success.
Nyamsuren Delger, Executive Officer for Issues and Concerns
Nyamsuren was born and raised in Mongolia, a country in the heart of Central Asia. A Psychology student, she found her interest in this field while working as assistant at a Human Resources department in a mining company. She finds joy in working with people and looks forward to serving in her new role.
Anna Michel, Executive Officer Satellite Campus Representative
Anna is a student in the Carpentry program at the Wood Technology Center (WTC) and will represent Seattle Central’s satellite campuses in student government. Anna discovered her passion for carpentry after leaving her desk job as a civil rights paralegal. She rode her bicycle across the country while volunteering to build houses with a non-profit affordable housing organization called Bike & Build. In addition to representing the WTC students, Anna will provide a voice for students in the Allied Health and Maritime programs, and will be a strong advocate for vocational training in higher education.
