2018 All-Washington Academic Team members selected
Students Emilio Chavez and Jie Shan Tan were selected for Phi Theta Kappa’s (PTK) 2018 All-Washington Academic Team representing Seattle Central. They will be honored at the awards ceremony on Thursday, Mar. 22 at South Puget Sound Community College.
The All-Washington Academic Team started over 20 years ago to honor academic high-achievers from community and technical colleges who have made positive contributions to their communities. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society that recognizes scholarship among two-year college students who are working to complete associate degrees.
Chavez is a web design student from Miami who is passionate about paying it forward. As the communications coordinator for Phi Theta Kappa, he manages their social media accounts and website and collaborates with the Associated Student Council. Outside of PTK, Chavez holds a job at Seattle Central’s Information Technology (IT) program. He plans to transfer to the University of Washington to major in either human center design or international studies. After he earns a bachelor’s degree, Chavez wants to enter into law school and become an attorney.
Tan, originally from southeast China, is planning to study social welfare or psychology and loves to dedicate her time to volunteering. She currently serves as Phi Theta Kappa’s project coordinator where she leads committees and comes up with quarterly projects to improve the school’s climate. Outside of PTK, Tan is involved with the college’s manga and anime club. After Seattle Central, she hopes to transfer to a four-year university – particularly at a school outside of the U.S. She eventually wants to become a professional counselor for foster kids or work with family and youth.
The All-Washington Academic Team event is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa International, the presidents and trustees of Washington’s two-year colleges, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges and KeyBank, which awards $250 scholarships to each member of the team.
